No. 13 Miami (8-2) at Virginia Tech (3-7), Saturday, Noon, ESPN

Latest line: Miami is favored by 18 1/2 points

Will the real Miami Hurricanes please stand up? After weeks of inconsistent play, a couple losses and some slow starts, Miami put together its first thoroughly dominant effort in weeks against N.C. State. Have the Hurricanes figured something out about themselves, allowing them to reach their full potential at last? Or will we see more inconsistency from UM this week as a big favorite on the road? I expect the former.

Miami just played its most complete game against North Carolina State and Virginia Tech just lost to Florida State by 20 points. That sums up this matchup. Miami needs to make sure everything is in good working order for the following game at Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale. The Hurricanes also got good news on the injury front as standout running back Mark Fletcher Jr. is expected to return. Cornerback OJ Frederique Jr. also is expected to come back after a three-game absence.

The Hurricanes must win their final two games to have any shot of making the postseason. But that’s the easier part of the equation. The Hurricanes are an 18.5-point road favorite against the struggling Hokies, and they will likely be the favorite against unranked Pitt the following week. UM also could still sneak into the ACC title game, but it will need help from other teams. Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck is coming off arguably his best game of the year last week against N.C. State. That should continue against the Hokies.
