The Trump administration rationalizes the blowing up of Venezuelan boats and crew members suspected of drug smuggling based upon America’s “war on drugs.”

We must give thanks that the White House hasn’t begun a Trumpian version of America’s “war on poverty.”

Arbitrary tariffs

Vice President JD Vance was on TV saying the administration has done great things regarding the economy. He admitted there was work to be done and he asked the public to be patient. I hope he wasn’t referring to the tariffs President Trump has arbitrarily imposed.

The price of coffee is expected to go up as reciprocal tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are set to begin on April 9. The tariffs are being applied to imported goods from over 60 countries. What I know, with no exaggeration, is that I am paying twice the price for the same name-brand coffee I’ve been buying for years. The meatloaf dinner for our family has doubled in price due to rising meat prices.

I remember when the Biden administration called for patience after the infrastructure bill passed (a bill that, I might add, was beneficial for many red states). Somehow, I don’t remember the MAGA people exactly supporting that legislation.

Let’s not go backwards

Thank you, Instacart, for sparing me the stress of seeing shoppers carrying guns.

Are we going backwards in time to the Old West of 100 years ago?

No, thanks. Let’s move forward to trust and neighborliness!

Weapons of mass distraction

Venezuela. James Comey. The White House Ballroom. Dozens more “issues,” all designed to take your eye off the ball.

What ball? you ask.

How about making the $4 trillion tax cuts for the super-wealthy permanent, at a time when debt is our most dangerous enemy?

How about the billions, not millions, the Trump family could be making with crypto?

Like magicians, they use sleight of hand to divert your attention. Then, poof!

A seat at the table

As a small business owner, I believe it’s critical that we have a seat at the table when elected officials set policies that affect our businesses, employees and communities.

That’s why I went to Washington with more than 100 local entrepreneurs as part of the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Summit to talk to Sens. Rick Scott and Ashley Moody about the opportunities and challenging realities of owning and growing a small business in Florida. I hope that hearing from us helped them understand how vital it is for policymakers to stay connected to people creating jobs on Main Street.

The summit was a reminder of our strength and determination. Even as we navigate higher costs and hiring challenges, we continue to innovate and invest. Partnership between government and small businesses is key to sustaining the momentum.
