Make America Great Again?

All the things President Trump promised to fix have gotten worse.

Lower costs? He imposed irrational tariffs on a whim. Foreign countries don’t pay it; U.S. importers do and pass it along to us, the consumers.

Inflation is up since he took office. He promised to fix immigration and get rid of gangs and criminals. Instead, his masked agents assault immigrants reporting to immigration court.

Raiding businesses to find working, taxpaying immigrants. Deporting students and grandmothers.
ICE acts like a third-world militia. We’re using the full force of the U.S. fleet to blow up suspected low-level drug runners. Our allies no longer share intelligence with us because of these illegal strikes.

All the things that made us a great nation are under attack: our democratic principles, three co-equal branches of government, scientific research, equality and accountability, the rule of law, humanitarianism.

Trump made us an unreliable ally and unstable democracy. Meanwhile, he and his billionaire bros party like it’s 1929. Do we really want to repeat that?

Challenging political power

In a letter to the editor (“Apoplectic at CBS News,” Nov. 14), Richard Porter contends that the choice of Bari Weiss to run CBS News is to hire Democrats, Republicans, independents and libertarians. I’d ask if CBS News would like to use “fair and balanced” as a slogan — but that belongs to Fox.

Florida, a bright red state, applies MAGA politics statewide. Someone needs to offer commentary that questions the intractable one-party politics that we live with. It would be nice to live in a state with Republicans, Democrats, independents and libertarians effectively arguing and presenting competing plans for governing, but we don’t.

It is necessary that the media question the dogma of the party in power. As for CBS, I suspect Ms. Weiss’ initial function will be to make Republican politicians feel they have another friendly place.

The best part of the paper

The only interesting part of the Sun Sentinel is the Opinion page with its skewed anti-Trump letters.

A case in point is the preponderance of letters accusing Trump of trying to discard the Epstein files for fear of being implicated.

To dispel such nonsense, your editors should point out that the Biden administration sat on this Epstein garbage for four years, yet not one Democrat raised concern, but now they are screaming to get this stuff released.

Another point I want to make involves immigration. The letters I’ve read never note that Biden and Harris allowed hordes of illegals into our country.

My grandparents were legal immigrants who had to pass a physical at Ellis Island and prove they would not be a burden on the government. I don’t support deporting those who came here years ago and were allowed to remain without getting citizenship. If the government was ignorant enough to allow this, they should be allowed to stay.

The company he keeps

On the front page of the Nov. 21 newspaper, four columns wide, was a photograph of a smiling President Trump sitting next to the smiling Saudi crown prince.

The Page One headline read: Trump defends Saudi in journalist’s death.

The headline should have read: Trump — never happier than when he’s with murderous dictators or pedophiles.
