I am all for instilling a sense of patriotism in our school students, but the new history standards in Florida whitewash McCarthyism, just as Black history courses have been revised to appeal to the conservative right-wing political base in our state.
If history doesn’t fit your political narrative, no problem — just rewrite it! (Remember Kellyanne Conway’s “alternate facts”?)
Two thoughts come to mind here.
Will companion academic courses be taught discussing the evils of fascism, which is blatantly raising its ugly head in our state and country?
Will the course curriculum make the distinctions between communism and socialism? (They’re different. Do the research if you don’t know.)

It’s all about money
After reading the article concerning changing the name of Broward County to Lauderdale County, I must ask: Why?
In my 40-plus years of living here, no one has ever asked me what county I live in. If I were to say “Broward,” the next question would be, where is that near?
If it were not for your articles, I would have never known that Palm Beach County is “Wall Street South” or that Miami-Dade is the gateway to Latin America. So much for that argument.
It seems to me that the people wanting to change the name are looking for ways to increase rents since they made a point to say that business rent is 40% more (in Delray Beach) and that condos here cost less per square foot than elsewhere.
Will a name change mean you could charge more for rents or restaurant meals? They are barely affordable now.

Like spoiled brats
I am ashamed of our elected officials in Washington. Their public displays of insane and angry rhetoric divide people. The sensationalism and melodrama of their public statements and their heated rhetoric only spurs violent reactions. It also misleads the public.
In a nutshell, the “leaders” who are entrusted to work for the good of the citizens behave like spoiled brats.
Their inability and unwillingness to work together to reach a budget is hurting the regular folks, while they keep their remunerations and benefits all along.
What happened to government by the people and for the people?
The ones who are hurting are the hard-working, taxpaying, law-abiding Americans struggling to keep jobs with decent wages to be able to pay their bills, and at the same time provide for their families and educate their children.

Blame the Democrats
So much going on these days! I have a few observations.
“Escape from New York” is no longer just the title of a movie. Where is Snake Plissken when you need him?
The people who call Trump and his supporters fascists just elected socialists to office in New York and Seattle.
Democrats blamed Republicans for the shutdown, causing widespread hunger, airport failures and millions of workers going without pay. These are the same Democrats who voted 15 times against reopening the government.
Democrats had power for years but never voted to release the Epstein files. After the “Schumer Shutdown,” the same Democrats demand that the files be released. I say release all of it and let the facts be known for all to see. My guess is a lot of powerful people of all persuasions will never allow it to happen.
