Thank you for the Sun Sentinel editorial (“Publix should keep guns out of its stores,” Oct. 12).

Hear, hear!

Let’s hope sanity prevails and somehow this new law can be overturned. We shouldn’t have to feel like we’re in a Wild West movie when we’re shopping at Publix.

If I could afford to do it, I would move to a blue state — like back to Manhattan.

A pleasure no more

Shopping at Publix will definitely no longer be a pleasure, due to its corporate decision to allow open carrying of guns with no questions asked.

The corporate rationale that it is now the law in Florida disregards the fact that Publix, like other businesses, can opt out of open carry simply by posting notices at store entrances.

Does Publix fully understand the state appeals court decision? Apparently not.

This flawed decision makes police officers’ jobs much harder. Publix will allow people without any vetting or gun safety training to enter its stores, solely to intimidate others or for their own self-aggrandizement.

Where is Publix’s commitment that its customers come first?

Publix has made a terrible decision that some day will come back to haunt the company, ethically, morally and legally. What is next? Will Publix now allow firearms or ammunition to be sold in their stores, maybe from vending machines, no questions asked?

Enough is enough, Publix.

Grand jury questions

Hopefully, the grand jury sitting in Leon County will see if any crime was committed [in the Hope Florida scandal] and will indict the state attorney general.

A.G. James Uthmeier will then proceed to give up Gov. Ron DeSantis.

How involved in this was First Lady Casey DeSantis is another question.

Support local libraries

I write to express my support for the public libraries across South Florida, which remain vital parts of our communities even in today’s digital world.

While some may think libraries are less important now that so much information is online, they continue to provide free access to knowledge, technology, and safe community spaces for people of all ages. From free internet access and tutoring programs to hosting children’s story hours and workshops for job seekers, libraries do far more than lending books.

They help bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone, no matter their income, has access to learning and opportunity. We must continue to invest in these essential institutions. Supporting our libraries means supporting education, equality and the future of our communities.

Paxlovid is too pricey

My doctor recently prescribed Paxlovid, an antiviral prescription drug used to treat symptoms of COVID-19.

I was leaving on vacation and he wanted to be sure I had medicine just in case. When he called in the prescription, the pharmacist told me it was going to be about $700, which my wife and I just could not believe.

We have prescription drug insurance, since we are both over 65. I even went on Good Rx to see if that was the real price; to my astonishment, the cost without insurance was $1,200 to $1,400.

When my insurance company verified that cost, I couldn’t believe it. A year ago, I was prescribed the same drug and the cost at the pharmacy was zero. So, when you go to your drugstore, if you have to get the prescription drug Paxlovid, beware.
