As Republicans were shutting down the federal government by refusing to negotiate with Democrats (even though they need their votes in the Senate), the Secretary of Defense called a meeting of senior military leadership to tout his accomplishments and stroke his ego, and that of our authoritarian president.
This was something that could have been handled on a Zoom call, and even that would have been a total waste of time.
This so-called meeting was disrespectful and insulting to the generals who had better things to do, such as dealing with national security issues.
This pep rally was a total waste of taxpayer dollars.

Who’s at fault here?
The federal government has been shut down. Who’s to blame?
I suspect it depends where you are on the political spectrum. Without getting too complicated, I’ll say this: The Republicans had no problem passing their “one big, beautiful bill” with its huge tax breaks for the ultra-rich.
Somehow those same Republicans couldn’t see their way to extending Affordable Care Act subsidies so that millions of Americans could retain affordable insurance.
How anyone can rationalize these actions is beyond me and, I would hope, most other Americans, too.

Enough is enough
As if the wealthy weaseling out of paying income taxes was not bad enough, Gov. Ron DeSantis is now pushing for no property taxes. The main beneficiaries will be all the mansion owners along both coasts.
We know why the state DOGE was organized: so they can say we don’t need this revenue because counties and cities are wasteful. I for one can’t wait for the next election for governor — and it won’t be DeSantis’ wife Casey I will be voting for.
Revenue streams to run the state are disappearing, and our home-rule ability to write our own local laws is diminished.
Our ability to say what our libraries stock on their shelves and what tax money we collect is sent to private schools because the wealthy shouldn’t have to pay for that either. And we can’t have any pesky inspections to see if these private schools are actually teaching and succeeding like public schools are required to do. Enough!

A disgrace to America

I was very glad that ABC television finally came to their senses, but I still feel that they overstepped their boundaries.
I guess people in high places pulled strings to have this done. Since their screw-up, I have basically cut off just about all ties that I had with ABC, Disney World or any other company that was involved in this disgrace to the people of the world.
Hooray for freedom of speech. May it never go away.

Free speech, if you agree
Free speech for public employees in Florida seems to exist only if the employee agrees with the governor. That isn’t right.
