The Department of Justice is not there to serve the president’s whims. He doesn’t own it. We, the people, own it.
This administration appears to be one of the most corrupt in American history. It’s all about power, control and revenge. He has unleashed the ability of our politicians to lie without question, so it seems ridiculous that this pathological liar is instructing DOJ to go after James Comey for lying. No one is safe from the president’s need to exact revenge on his enemies.
As the head of Joseph Stalin’s secret police in the old Soviet Union said, “Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime.”

Pat Beall is heart-healthy
It was no surprise to see another negative letter from a “Trumplican,” Mark Goldstein, about columnist Pat Beall.

She writes about serious subjects with a sense of humor — something your MAGA writers seem to lack. She also uses facts and opinions, which in America we are all entitled to do.
I read their letters all the time, and find them to be mostly lacking in fact, focused on the writers’ opinions, and devoid of any semblance of humor.
How sad that “Trumplicans” don’t know how to laugh, except at those unfortunates for whom they have nothing but disdain.
It was coincidental that Mr. Goldstein’s letter appeared on the same day Pat Beall wrote about her own humorous writings (If they don’t want jokes, they should stop providing material, column, Sept. 27).
In it, Beall wrote that she’s “not good at jokes.”
To that end, Beall wrote: “Let us now make fun of the people who say we cannot make fun of people who frequently make fun of other people, and also who do things so sky-high harebrained that they cartoon themselves all by themselves.”
H-U-M-O-R! It’s good for the heart, digestion and certainly mental well being. Try it, you might like it. And for heaven’s sake, don’t stop reading Pat Beall’s column!

An unaccountable court
A federal statute says any judge, magistrate or justice must recuse themselves from any decision involving them personally.
When Justice Clarence Thomas refused to recuse himself from a case involving his wife’s emails, he may have committed an impeachable offense.
When Justice Samuel Alito flew an upside-down American flag outside his house and refused to recuse himself from decisions involving Donald Trump, I think he broke the law.
The U.S. has never actually removed a Supreme Court justice (Abe Fortas quit under pressure in 1969). The reason the court is no longer grounded in the Constitution is there is no one to hold the justices to account. They basically do what they want.
That’s not what the framers intended, nor what the laws say. And until we rein in this rogue radical right Supreme Court, we will never get our country back. A right-wing zealot minority runs this country, and they have set up the judiciary to continue to help them run it.

In the pocketbook
I look back at conservative economic boycotts against, for example, Budweiser and Target. As I recall, these were all over the news.
As I recall, both businesses backed down to these pressure campaigns. But I have read almost nothing about any liberals or First Amendment advocates mounting anything similar.
I now understand why the right has had so much success in these culture war campaigns.
