Barbara G. Makris OBITUARY

Barbara G. Makris, 63, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida passed away on December 22, 2025 with family by her side. She is survived by her sister Katina Makris, nephew Jacob Hollander, aunt Evangeline Makris and other loving family members.

Barbara grew up in Brookville, Long Island, New York. She obtained an undergraduate degree from Florida Southern University and a masters degree from University of Miami. Her love of people and calm demeaner served her well in the hospitality industry, which included 33 years with Hilton Hotels. She taught third grade Sunday School at both First Presbyterian Church and Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Fort Lauderdale for over 30 years, endearing her to many, both young and old. Additionally, she participated in many Mission trips to locations such as Brazil and Israel.

A loyal US Navy League and USO Member, Barbara was active for 25 years in endless naval ship meet & greets and many other hospitality activities. She proudly attended the US Leyte Gulf Missile Cruiser commissioning. With a touch of wanderlust, Barbara enjoyed traveling with friends and family far and wide, with a particular fondness of her anglophile affinity to the British Isles and family heritage to Greece.

Her gentle, kind, compassionate and gracious countenance is forever an inspiration to all. She will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing her.

Viewing will take place on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at 10 am at Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church; 820 NE 15th Avenue; Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304. Funeral service will immediately follow at 11 am at Saint Demetrios.

Barbara will be buried alongside her beloved parents George and Patricia Makris at Locust Valley Cemetery, Locust Valley, Long Island, New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Fort Lauderdale (address above) and/or Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral; 244 SW 24th Road; Miami, Florida 33129.
